Malpositions

Common causes of knee pain are malpositions of the knee joint. The leg axes must therefore be investigated carefully even in middle-aged people.

One opportunity for correction of axis malposition is opening wedge osteotomy.

Opening wedge osteotomy is significantly more gentle than closing wedge osteotomy, which is still very frequently used. The advantage is that damage to the nerves is more rare, and patients can often bear full weight more quickly after opening wedge osteotomy than those operated on in a different manner.

Osteotomy

Long leg axis images are required for exact determination of the axis problem and planning of the adjustment operation (=correction osteotomy).

In accordance with the preliminary planning, the bone is almost completely cut through with a saw and/or a chisel (=osteotomy).

Wedging of the osteotomy. The bone defect is then filled with bone substance and fixed with a plate for improved stability.

Result after a transposition operation on the lower leg and thigh.
